MEET THE SUMDEES
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 26 – 3:00 p.m. – EMMEDIA GALLERY

(For Immediate Release – Friday, September 17, 2004) - Noted Canadian documentary filmmakers MARKHAM STREET FILMS (RADIO REVOLUTION : The Rise & Fall of The Big 8, GENUINE ARTICLE, WRINKLE), are pleased to announce the premieres of FLATLY STACKED and MEET THE SUMDEES at the 2004 Calgary International Film Festival.

On SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25th at 4:00 p.m. FLATLY STACKED will premiere at The Uptown Stage & Screen (612 8th Ave. SW) in Calgary. FLATLY STACKED, is a humorous yet insightful 52-minute documentary that asks the question: Can a flat-chested woman find happiness in a world obsessed with big breasts? FLATLY STACKED is film maker Judy Holm’s personal journey to discover the answer this question. The women featured in FLATLY STACKED range in age from 13 to 53. They include young girls on the cusp of womanhood who are flat-chested and anxious about it, older women who are completely comfortable with their petite breast size, and others still who are thinking about taking steps to change their bodies. The women featured in the film are articulate and passionate about the subject. Some of their stories are funny, others poignant -- all are unique and dynamic. FLATLY STACKED, produced by Judy Holm and directed by Michael McNamara of Markham Street Films includes personal stories, archives and amusing animation. FLATLY STACKED lifts and enhances this marginalized and fast-disappearing female silhouette.

On SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 26th at 3:00 p.m. MEET THE SUMDEES will premiere at the EMMEDIA Gallery (351 - 11 Ave. SW. Suite #203), Calgary. MEET THE SUMDEES chronicles the coming together of two cultures as a set of WASP Canadian parents become the in-laws to a modern Islamic woman, her parents and, by extension, their entire family in Pakistan.  In September 2000 the filmmaker’s son Aaron married a young Pakistani-Canadian woman named Saira.  Before the wedding could take place, Aaron, the great grandson of a Protestant Minister, embraced Islam and became a Muslim. Six months after the wedding, the newlyweds and both sets of parents traveled to Pakistan to meet dozens of Saira’s relatives across the country - from Karachi to Multan to Rawalpindi and Islamabad, to the Himalayas and beyond. MEET THE SUMDEES is a point-of-view diary. Raised as Christians but living a secular life, neither Judy nor her husband Michael had ever traveled in the east or spent much time with Muslims. Now, they were not just visiting, they were a part of the culture.  Would they be accepted?  Could they accept the impact of this new chapter in their lives their son’s and their future grandchildren?
